LINCOLN SQUARE — A new dumpling spot is taking over the former home of Gather in Lincoln Square this summer.
Background on Gather
In December, the owners of Gather, 4539 N. Lincoln Ave., closed the business after 12 years without offering a reason. Last week, neighbors noticed new signs at the address announcing Union Dumpling House taking over the spot.

Founders and Their Vision
The new restaurant is from husband and wife team Raymond Tan and Lulu Zhao. The couple signed a lease in April and are currently renovating the space. “We are an Asian fusion restaurant specializing in daily handcrafted dumplings made with nutritional balance, promoting a healthy lifestyle for our community,” Zhao told Block Club.
Menu and Opening Plans
They plan to open the new restaurant by July, if not sooner, Zhao said. “We’re still doing some construction stuff, and we’re still testing the menu,” Tan said. The cuisine will mainly be Chinese-style dumplings, but “some of them will be combined with American flavors,” he said. For example, the couple said one menu item they’re considering is a cheesy pizza bun prepared with beef chunks, melted cheese and carrots. Other possible menu items include ground lamb dumplings served with cilantro as well as a pork, chive and shrimp dumpling.
Location and Community
“We love the overall atmosphere of Lincoln Square, where the community is friendly, and our shop is conveniently located across from a music school. We believe this location and its residents will boost our business,” Zhao said. Once open, the restaurant will offer fast-casual dining where customers place their order at the counter and then take it to-go or eat in the restaurant’s seating area, Tan said.
