Introduction to Lucky Trendy Sushi

LOGAN SQUARE — When Ratchapol Treedamrongrit and Narumon Sutthitham separately immigrated to Chicago from Thailand almost 15 years ago, they didn’t know they’d find each other — and fall in love. They also didn’t know they’d start a sushi business in Logan Square. Treedamrongrit and Sutthitham fell in love while working their first jobs in the United States at Green Tea Japanese Restaurant in Lincoln Park. They eventually took over the business, and now they’ve opened a second restaurant together: Lucky Trendy Sushi at 2735 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The Concept of Lucky Trendy Sushi

Lucky Trendy, which opened last month, combines traditional and modern sushi. It replaces Gorilla Sushi, which closed earlier this year after several years in business. Lucky Trendy invites newcomers to Japanese food — particularly sushi — with a simple menu of maki, nigiri and small plates, all under $20. “The new brand here is like sushi meant for anyone, anytime, any day,” Treedamrongrit said. Treedamrongrit and Sutthitham said they wanted to target new sushi eaters who may be scared to try sushi because they assume that just means eating raw fish. “Some people feel like sushi is like raw as in hard to eat, but we try to create things that are more tasteful and flavorful,” Sutthitham said.

Menu and Pricing

On the comic book-style menu, there are four specialty rolls priced at $6.50, 21 signature rolls are between $8.95-$15.95 and two-piece nigiri options are $5.95. Lucky Trendy also offers small, medium and specialty plates for diners who are at different stages in their sushi journey, or if customers want to share dishes. Beverages include soft drinks, traditional Japanese teas and coffee, and customers can bring their own alcoholic beverages for a $2 all-encompassing corkage fee.
