Current Weather Conditions

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy, showers grow more numerous as the night proceeds, with isolated thunderstorms possible after midnight. Low: 49.

May is typically Chicago’s wettest month of the year, averaging nearly 4.50 inches of rain, so it’s no surprise that the start of the new month Thursday will begin with extensive cloud cover, scattered showers and, possibly a few thunderstorms.

Rains are likely to come in separate waves with dry periods mixed in.

Severe Weather Outlook

Severe weather will not be a concern for the Chicagoland area, but strong to locally severe thunderstorm development is expected from parts of the southern Plains into the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, and northeastward to the Lower Great Lakes during the day on Thursday. Strong to severe wind gusts and hail will be the primary threats.

Temperature Outlook

Highs Thursday will be a few degrees below normal but fairly typical for May 1st.

Friday highs will be a few degrees warmer, again close to typical early May norms.

Looking Ahead

A spectacular stretch of mid-Spring weather is coming up for most everyone. Even in Las Vegas and Phoenix, highs will be in the 60s and 70s by Sunday and Monday, near record cool for daytime highs.

There are no heat waves in sight, but an overall milder-than-normal temperature regime is expected as we move into May, with a near 10 degree above normal anomaly centered over North Dakota through mid-May with the blocking ridge in place. Cooler than normal, but pleasant weather covers portions of the southwest and southern Plains.
