Introduction to 5800 North Cafe
NORWOOD PARK — After three years in the making, 5800 North Cafe is now serving up fresh banana coconut pancakes and mimosa flights in Norwood Park.
Albion Gjinika and his wife, Eva, opened the restaurant about two weeks ago at 5800 N. Milwaukee Ave. The couple said they wanted to open a brunch restaurant for years; they bought Phil’s Pizza D’Oro in 2022 and moved the longtime pizza joint next door, offering carryout and delivery. They’ve opened 5800 North Cafe in the former Phil’s home.
To develop 5800 North Cafe, the Gjinikas explored cafes across the United States, perfected their menu and transformed the former Phil’s dining room into their dream breakfast place.
“We wanted something that felt homey and cozy,” Eva Gjinika said. “And we wanted to bring good food to the neighborhood.”

Years In The Making
Albion and Eva Gjinika immigrated to Chicago from Albania in 2013. The couple ran a pancake house in suburban Mount Prospect for five years, but they always wanted to start a restaurant of their own, they said.
Albion Gjinika said they wanted to use their joint business experience. He has a degree in business management and Eva Gjinika has a degree in accounting.
Eva Gjinika said they worked with a designer and an architect to make sure the cafe felt bright and welcoming. The restaurant has ample seating and features a 100-person party room that can be rented.

Menu and Operating Hours
The expansive menu at 5800 North Cafe features everything from buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches to crepes made with Nutella, bananas or strawberries. Albion Gjinika said the berry mascarpone French toast and the barbacoa chilaquiles skillet have been customer favorites.
The cafe is open 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
The Gjinikas will continue to operate Phil’s Pizza next door. Phil’s is open 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and Sundays and 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
