Introduction to the Adinkra Tower Sculpture

The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC) recently unveiled the Adinkra Tower Sculpture at the Auburn Gresham Healthy Lifestyle Hub. The eight-foot monument, created by St. Louis-based artist Thomas Sleet, stands as a symbol of unity, wisdom, and cultural heritage. Located at 839 W. 79th St., the sculpture honors the strength and identity of the Auburn Gresham community. Inspired by Adinkra symbols rooted in West African tradition, the piece reflects themes of resilience and collective pride.

The Artist’s Vision

Sleet, known for his work blending natural forms with salvaged materials, collaborated with GAGDC to ensure the sculpture captured the neighborhood’s spirit. He visited Auburn Gresham to shape his vision and create an artistic statement that speaks to the area’s cultural identity. The artist previously designed an Adinkra Tower for St. Louis, commissioned by Arts in Transit. His work explores the relationship between structure and nature, individuality and community.

The Unveiling Event

The unveiling event brought together community members, local leaders, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the artistic and cultural significance of the monument. Attendees reflected on the impact of the sculpture and its role in highlighting the neighborhood’s rich heritage. “This sculpture embodies the great work happening in Auburn Gresham,” said Sleet. “It’s about transformation and resilience, and I’m honored to contribute to this narrative.”
