Kenwood Academy Girls Basketball Team Brings IHSA Class 4A State Title Back to South Side for First Time in Program History

A Historic Season Comes to an End with State Championship

The Kenwood Academy girls basketball team made history Saturday, finishing a dream 2024-25 season with the ultimate prize. In the program’s first-ever trip to the Illinois High School Association State Tournament, the Broncos brought the Class 4A state title home to Chicago’s South Side.

A Long Journey to the Top

Coached by Andre Lewis, Kenwood finished off a remarkable 35-3 season by defeating Palatine Fremd, 65-44, in Saturday’s Class 4A state championship game. One of Kenwood’s three losses this season came against a prep school from Ontario, Canada.

A Season of Dominance

After winning the Chicago Public Schools Conference title during the regular season, the Broncos won two regional games and two sectional games, avenging a loss to Chicago Whitney Young in the regular-season finale by defeating that team to reach the super-sectional. On March 3 at Hinsdale Central, Kenwood beat Chicago Marist, 62-48, to reach the IHSA State Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Road to State

In Friday’s Class 4A state semifinals, the Broncos defeated fellow first-time State Tournament qualifier Alton, 61-55, before capturing the state title with Saturday’s win over Palatine Fremd, which won the Class 4A state title in 2020 and won the third-place game at state last season.

State Title Game Recap

Junior guard Danielle Brooks poured in 24 points to lead all scorers in Saturday’s state title game, while senior wing London Walker-George totaled 19 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists, and senior guard Ariella Henigan added 16 points and seven rebounds.
