Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Returns to Chicago with Tributes, Premieres, and a Farewell Performance

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world’s most celebrated dance companies, is returning to The Auditorium Theatre for four performances from March 7-9, 2025. This year’s tour honors the life and legacy of Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, who passed away in 2024.

Led by Interim Artistic Director Matthew Rushing, the company will present two dynamic programs featuring three Chicago premieres, new productions, and Ailey classics, including the beloved Revelations.

“Auditorium audiences welcome Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater with great enthusiasm each spring, knowing a joyful experience awaits, and this year’s programming will be no exception,” said The Auditorium CEO Rich Regan. “In this, the company’s 56th visit to The Auditorium, we are saddened by the passing of the legendary Ailey dancer and Artistic Director Judith Jamison, but we are pleased to pay tribute with a special opening night performance featuring an excerpt of Cry, the exuberant Ailey work that became her signature.”

A Farewell Performance for Vernard J. Gilmore

The Chicago engagement will also mark a significant milestone for Vernard J. Gilmore, a Chicago native and the company’s longest-tenured dancer, who will take his final bow after 28 seasons. Born and raised in Englewood, Gilmore began his professional training at Curie Performing and Creative Arts High School before earning a scholarship to The Ailey School. He later performed with Ailey II before joining the main company in 1997.

Chicago Premieres and Ailey Classics

The performances will showcase a mix of new works and beloved Ailey repertoire:

  • Friday, March 7 at 7:30 PM & Sunday, March 9 at 3 PM
    • Grace (1999, Chicago Premiere of 25th Anniversary Production) – Ronald K. Brown’s high-energy work blends African and American dance, set to music by Duke Ellington, Peven Everett, and Fela Kuti.
    • Finding Free (2024, Chicago Premiere) – Choreographed by Hope Boykin, this piece, featuring an original score by jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker, explores personal freedom through movement and music.
    • Cry (1971, Opening Night Excerpt) – This solo ballet, originally created by Alvin Ailey for Judith Jamison, will be performed as a tribute to her legacy.
    • Revelations (1960) – Ailey’s signature masterpiece, evoking themes of faith and resilience, will close the program.
  • Saturday, March 8 at 1 PM & 7:30 PM
    • Sacred Songs (2024, Chicago Premiere) – Matthew Rushing’s latest work revisits spirituals originally included in Ailey’s Revelations, offering a fresh interpretation of the timeless music.
    • Treading (1979, Chicago Premiere of New Production) – This duet by Elisa Monte is a mesmerizing exploration of movement, set to Steve Reich’s evocative score.
    • Many Angels (2024, Chicago Premiere) – Choreographer Lar Lubovitch’s debut work for the company is inspired by the question, “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”
    • Revelations (1960) – The legendary finale returns to lift audiences with its spiritual depth and emotional power.
