Sharpie’s, Detroit-Style Pizza Spot Near Salt Shed, Now Open from Ada Street Team

A New Venture from Co-Owners Scott Koehl and Ryan Bair

Sharpie’s, a new interstellar-themed restaurant specializing in Detroit-style pizza, has landed on Elston Avenue, offering a fast-casual option for pre- and post-show bites near the Salt Shed. This latest venture from co-owners Scott Koehl and Ryan Bair, the team behind Ada Street restaurant, brings a unique take on pizza to the neighborhood.

The Idea Behind Sharpie’s

During the pandemic, the Ada Street team experimented with making focaccia for a nearby drive-in theater, which evolved into their take on Detroit-style pizza. "When we were talking about doing this, we knew one thing: nothing subtle," Bair said. "We’re taking familiar things and pushing the flavors as far as they’ll go."

Menu Highlights

The menu features crispy twice-fried wings, Greek salad, and draft cocktails built for speed and convenience. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the menu is the Detroit-style pizza, with its caramelized crust and thick, airy dough. "If I’m ordering a pepperoni pizza, I want pepperoni on my pizza," Bair said. For comparison, the pepperoni pizza at Sharpie’s has about 70 slices of pepperoni.

A Fun and Nostalgic Theme

The restaurant’s interstellar theme was chosen to feel fun and nostalgic without being gimmicky. "We didn’t want to go full sci-fi diner, but we wanted a theme that had character, something we could really build on," Koehl said. "Think Pizza Planet from ‘Toy Story.’ Outer space just had that perfect mix of nostalgia and creativity."

Grand Opening and Hours

The restaurant held its grand opening on Wednesday and is open starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday, with plans to expand to seven days as soon as possible. The second floor will serve as an event space for larger gatherings and will also function as an extension of Ada Street for larger parties that can’t be accommodated there.

Conclusion

Sharpie’s is a unique addition to the neighborhood, offering a casual and convenient spot for pizza and more. With its Detroit-style pizza, crispy wings, and draft cocktails, this new restaurant is sure to become a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
