Chilly but sunny, kicks off roller-coaster week of March weather in Chicagoland

Chicagoland’s Unpredictable Spring Weather: A Roller Coaster Ride Ahead

It’s early March in Chicagoland, and we’re in for a treat – a taste of that typical spring roller coaster weather. After a week or so of mild temperatures, it’s dipped back to a winter feel early Sunday morning, with "feels-like" temperatures down into the teens in some locations.

According to the forecast, there’s very little wind, and plenty of sunshine is forecast for later Sunday, so high temperatures will creep into the mid- to upper 30s. It’ll get warmer on Monday, with highs in the upper 40s and isolated rain or snow showers possible.

On Tuesday, a weather system will bring south/southwest winds that’ll elevate temperatures back into the 50s. It’ll also bring the potential for heavy rainfall, with gusty winds and possibly a thunderstorm. Temps will dip on the back side of that front, with a couple chances for snow showers later this week, though nothing that should accumulate.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday’s rainfall will bring flooding potential, with partially frozen ground and the soaking rain on top of it. Temperatures will then fall rapidly on the back side of that weather system, which gives us a chance for some snow or a rain/snow mix. It should be dry for Thursday, with high temperatures near seasonal averages around 40. Friday brings another shot for some rain, which could change over to some snow by early Saturday.

As March progresses in Chicagoland, normal highs increase quite a bit from the first day of the month to the last day of the month. Daylight time also increases significantly, with clocks springing forward overnight this Saturday into Sunday.
