South Side Favorite Lem’s Bar-B-Q Wins James Beard Award

A Legacy of Excellence

Lem’s Bar-B-Q House has been a South Side staple for more than 70 years. Now, it’s been named an American classic by the James Beard Foundation.

Award-Winning BBQ

The James Beard America’s Classic Award: Great Lakes was bestowed upon Lem’s, 311 E. 75th St., for its longtime Chicago legacy. The America’s Classics Award is given to locally and independently owned restaurants that have "timeless appeal" and reflect "the characters and cultural traditions" of their community, according to the James Beard Foundation, named for the late American food writer and chef.

A Family Tradition

Lem’s Bar-B-Q joins the ranks of more than 100 restaurants that have been named American classics since the award was introduced in 1998. The barbecue restaurant was established in 1954 by brothers Bruce and Myles Lemons. Myles, a chef, created the restaurant’s coveted sauce and spice mix that "people kept coming back for," according to the Lem’s website.

The Secret Sauce

The unique flavor of Lem’s Bar-B-Q comes from their one-of-a-kind aquarium-style barbecue pit, where hickory wood, charcoal, and fire combine to create Chicago’s favorite barbecue spot. The secret sauce, a family recipe, is a key component of their signature flavors.

Award-Winning Team

The restaurant’s success is attributed to the family’s commitment to tradition, quality, and service. Carmen, James B. Lemons’ youngest daughter, now helms the family business, alongside longtime friend Lynn and nephews Billy and Kameron. Carmen’s philosophy of life, "to lead with love, integrity, and character," has sustained her throughout her business journey and is the secret to Lem’s success.

Other Award Winners

This year’s America’s Classics Award winners include The Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum, Idaho; Sullivan’s Castle Island in Boston; Lucky Wishbone in Anchorage, Arkansas; Dooky Chase in New Orleans; and Gaido’s in Galveston, Texas.

Celebrating the Best of the Best

The James Beard restaurant and chef award winners will be honored at a ceremony on June 16 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, 20 N. Wacker Drive. Learn more about the awards and ceremony here.
