Freezing Rain Hits Roads

Must read

Chicago Weather: Thursday Morning Forecast

FOX 32’s Mike Caplan breaks down today’s weather outlook.

Current Situation

Falling precipitation came to an end this morning, but the problems are far from over. It will take several hours to get temperatures above freezing. In fact, that may not happen in some areas until noon. The small amount of ice that has fallen has turned into a glaze as expected on untreated surfaces and will continue to create difficult travel this morning in many areas.

Travel Conditions

Walking out of your own home could be a nightmare. Highs eventually this afternoon will top out in the upper 30s, promoting melting of the sheet of ice. Skies will also clear with sunshine lending a hand this afternoon. It will turn out windy this afternoon and this evening.

School Delays

Several local schools have delayed their opening today due to weather. Tap for a full list of school delays.

Future Forecast

What’s Next?

Tomorrow will be a quiet day with partly to mostly cloudy skies and highs around freezing.

The next storm system moves in on Saturday and will likely have a combination of rain, freezing rain, and snow. Once again, amounts are not expected to be much, but there will be impacts, particularly in the areas which receive the freezing rain. South of the city would be favored for the ice. Perhaps an inch or two of snow could accumulate north of the city.

After that storm exits Saturday night, colder air will move in and likely keep temperatures below freezing all of next week. That means whatever ice and snow fall will not be going away without help from human beings.
