Black-Owned Moor’s Brewing Teams Up With Steep Ravine To Open Taproom In Logan Square
A New Era for the Logan Square Craft Beer Scene
The recently closed Ravinia Brewing space in Logan Square is coming back to life as the neighborhood’s first Black-owned taproom. Moor’s Brewing Company, which launched three years ago in Bronzeville, is joining forces with Steep Ravine Brewing Company to open Diversey House, a restaurant, sports bar, and brewery at 2601 W. Diversey Ave.
A Partnership Born Out of Necessity
Steep Ravine, formerly Ravinia Brewing, closed its taproom at the location in November, but the new partnership will allow it to bring some beer back to the space. Moor’s and Steep Ravine will each have about 10 beers on draft at Diversey House, the owners told Block Club after announcing the news Wednesday. A full food menu by Marc Anthony Bynum, a three-time “Chopped” champion making his Chicago debut, is also on tap.
A Focus on Representation and Inclusion
Amid a crowded, predominantly white craft beer scene, fewer than 1 percent of the industry is Black-owned. Increasing representation is one of the main reasons Moor’s was created, Johnson said. Being part of Diversey House will help the company reach a North and Northwest Side audience, expand its offerings, and work with industry giants.
New Murals, New Designs, and a New Era
Diversey House has new murals and designs by local artists, giving the space a fresh and vibrant feel. The biggest change for the Logan Square spot from what used to be Ravinia Brewing is the sports bar component. There will be 25 TVs and even a personalized audio experience available at every table for people who want to hear a specific game amid the brewery chatter, said Kris Walker, co-owner of Steep Ravine.
Exclusive Collaborations and Beers
The brewery owners met through mutual connections and quickly realized this next chapter was the right fit for both of their businesses, especially considering the industry’s struggles in recent years, Walker said. The taproom will offer curated programming and food pairings, including the Big Game and March Madness screenings, trivia nights, and more.
A Loaded Hot Dog Bar Bite
A loaded hot dog bar bite will be on the Diversey House menu, featuring ribs served with pickled watermelon rind and espresso-chipotle BBQ sauce, Rockaway fries loaded with oxtail ragout, beer cheese fondue, charred corn, and a variety of sandwiches and burgers.
A New Era for Food and Community
Bynum, from New York City, is known for his elevated pub fare. “Chicago has such a rich cultural and culinary history — it’s the perfect place to expand my passion for creating elevated, approachable dishes,” Bynum said in a statement. “This city is known for its incredible food scene, its legacy of Black chefs, and its vibrant neighborhoods. I’m excited to join the Diversey House team to bring a menu that celebrates Chicago’s diversity while creating a space where food and community truly come together.”
Grand Opening and Black History Month Celebration
Diversey House opens February 5 in conjunction with a 12 p.m. Black History Month celebration. The event will offer food, drinks from other Black-owned breweries, comedy, a live DJ, and more.
Conclusion
The opening of Diversey House marks a new era for the Logan Square craft beer scene and a significant step forward for Black-owned breweries in the industry. With its unique blend of food, beer, and community, Diversey House is poised to become a beloved gathering place for Northwest Siders and a beacon of representation and inclusion in the craft beer world.
