Major Winter Storm to Miss Chicagoland to the South

Must read

CHICAGO — It’ll remain frigid Sunday around Chicagoland, and we could see some lake-effect snow Sunday night.

As for the major winter storm that’s passing through the Midwest, we’re going to dodge it. That storm will pass Chicagoland to the south, affecting downstate road, rail, and air traffic. Places like Kansas City, St. Louis, Champaign, Springfield, and Indianapolis are expected to get socked with more than 5 inches of snow Sunday into Monday, with 8 to 12 inches predicted in the areas of heaviest snow.

A Winter Storm Warning and even a Blizzard Warning will be in effect into Monday afternoon for the areas expected to get hit the hardest, with a Winter Weather Advisory or Ice Storm Warning in effect for other areas along that line. But the furthest north in Illinois that advisory extends is Iroquois County, south of Chicagoland — for now, at least.

As for us, Sunday temps won’t top out until late in the evening, with highs in the mid-20s. It’ll be a cloudy, cold, and gusty day, with north/northeast winds up to 30 miles per hour later in the day.

Monday will again be breezy, with periods of morning snow, then afternoon snow showers, and steady winds from 15 to 25 miles per hour. Depending on your location, Chicagoland could see 1 to 3 inches of snow over the next 24 to 36 hours.
