Suburban Family Displaced After Fire Destroys Home on Thanksgiving Morning

Fire Breaks Out in Park Ridge

A devastating fire broke out on Thanksgiving morning in Park Ridge, Illinois, leaving a suburban family displaced and their home in ruins.

Extensive Damage Reported

According to Jeff Sorensen, the Fire Chief for the City of Park Ridge, the blaze was extensive, with fire on multiple levels of the home. “It is, there’s extensive damage to the home. It’s certainly not habitable,” Sorensen said.

Blaze Began in Rear of Home

The fire began in the rear of the two-story home, located near Gillick Street & South Fairview Avenue, and quickly spread, causing significant damage. Sorensen stated that crews faced challenges while working to get the fire under control, including multiple reports of victims inside the home.

Crews Search Home for Victims

Crews began searches on all levels of the home, searching for people and also doing a fire attack. “They are searching for people and they are also doing a fire attack. So there are two things going on right at once. It required a lot of resources,” Sorensen said.

Neighbor Departments Called in for Help

The fire eventually went to a box alarm, bringing in nearby departments to help combat the blaze. Sorensen stated that over 12 to 15 communities responded to help, making sure they had the necessary resources in case they found victims.

No Victims Found

Despite initial concerns, crews did not find any victims inside the home. “We also had cars in the driveway, so that’s usually an indicator in an early morning fire that you have people home, especially on a holiday,” Sorensen said. “It’s very stressful on the crews, especially when you go multiple minutes, they probably went 15-20 minutes thinking they had victims, they just weren’t finding them.”

Smoke Alarms Worked

According to Sorensen, the home did have working smoke alarms, which likely saved lives.

GoFundMe Fundraiser Set Up

By the afternoon hours, a GoFundMe fundraiser had been set up on behalf of the impacted family, who lost everything in the fire.

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and an investigation is ongoing.

Conclusion

The devastating fire has left a suburban family displaced and without a home, but thankfully, no one was injured or killed. The community has come together to support the family, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.
