While they were in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, Martinez and his partner saw a double-parked Ford Escape with a broken tail light and fraudulent registration. Prosecutors said in court that a passenger in the vehicle grabbed a machine gun and shot Martinez five times. The driver of the vehicle was also killed. Darion McMillian, 23, of south suburban Harvey has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder — one being first-degree murder of a police officer — along with residential burglary, unlawful use of a weapon-machine gun, and unlawful use of a weapon.
Arrest and Charges
A judge at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse denied McMillian bond during a hearing Thursday, before he was transported back to the Cook County Jail. McMillian has served time in connection with a 2019 shooting and has two pending cases in Will County.

St. Christina Catholic Church has invited police officers, firefighters, and paramedics to attend the special mass in a show of solidarity with the city’s first responders. Officer Martinez’s funeral is scheduled to take place next week. Sunday’s service at St. Christina begins at 10:30 a.m.
