Big Bear Sushi And Thai Brings Colorful Sushi Rolls, Thai Classics To Irving Park

Cozy Corner Spot on Milwaukee Avenue

Big Bear Sushi and Thai opened its doors in August at 3334 N. Milwaukee Ave., bringing a new taste of Asia to the Avondale and Irving Park border. The restaurant’s co-owner, Puvadon “PJ” Jianpadid, and his business partners, Sivadol Ketmanee and Chitpol Chinarj, aimed to create a welcoming spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy high-quality sushi and Thai dishes.

From Experience to Ownership

After working in Japanese and Thai restaurants for over 10 years, Jianpadid and his partners decided to take the leap and open their own restaurant. They searched for the perfect location on the Northwest Side for a year before finding the Milwaukee Avenue spot, which previously housed International Latin Fusion.

A Plan in Place

Jianpadid, who hails from Thailand and lives in Jefferson Park, is thrilled to bring Asian flavors to the area. “This one is an opportunity for us, and we are ready to do it because we had a plan,” he said. “It’s almost a year that we wanted to open. A lot of people drive on Milwaukee and then stop. This location is really good because it allows people from Logan Square and Avondale who use the street to come by.”

A Visual Feast

Big Bear’s menu boasts an eclectic mix of sushi rolls with decorative sauce designs, appetizers such as stuffed avocado tempura and steamed buns, and Thai dishes like tofu curry, pad Thai, and more. The Avondale roll features yellow tail snapper with jalapeño, avocado, and mango topped with tuna, spicy mayo, hot sauce, and crispy shallot. The Chicago Bear roll is soy paper with spicy salmon, avocado, and tempura crunch topped with sear salmon, ikura, spicy mayo, and unagi sauce. Jianpadid recommends trying the signature Chicago-themed rolls.

A Liquor-Free Experience

Big Bear does not have a liquor license, and the owners do not anticipate applying for one due to the cost. However, patrons are welcome to bring their own beverages. Next summer, the owners plan to get a patio license to have sidewalk seating, making the most of the cozy corner spot.

A Message from the Owners

“We want people to come and enjoy our high-quality food,” Jianpadid said.

Conclusion

Big Bear Sushi and Thai brings a fresh and exciting dining experience to the Irving Park neighborhood. With its commitment to using high-quality ingredients and decades of experience, the restaurant is sure to become a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
